Synaesthetic Dance Company is a group of ten artists who are pursuing Bachelor in Fine Arts Degrees at Elon University in the major of Dance Performance and Choreography. Our name as a company is representative of our goal to fuse the senses through movement and technology. Synaesthesia is the intersection of the senses—to see sound, to taste emotion. We see our role as dancers as similar in that we experience our art through many senses simultaneously.  As both choreographers and dancers, we will illuminate the intersections of the sensory pathways using multimedia. By entwining visual, emotional, and physical stimuli, we strive to heighten the aesthetic beauty and inner poignancy of the human experience.

 

The primary interest of our company is to utilize contemporary avenues for the presentation of dance, pushing the boundaries of performative storytelling. As artists in the 21st century, we are witnessing the creation of a new virtual stage for dance. Inspired by these digital platforms, we aim to explore technological innovations through collaborations with artists across disciplines. Each one of our members brings a unique style and approach to the art form of dance. By intertwining our individual strengths and stories through the lens of a camera and a virtual platform, we hope to spread our passion for dance to a wider audience.

 

To achieve our goals, Synaesthetic Dance Company will conduct a series of film productions and photo shoots throughout the year in order to create material for a presentation in Turner Theater at Elon University in May of 2018. Each film will have Synaesthetic members as choreographers and dancers. Additional collaborators in the form of dancers, cinematographers and other visual artists may also be apart of these productions. Each production will have its own photo shoot conducted in conjunction with the film. In addition to these photo shoots connected with the films, other shoots will be done with Synaesthetic members throughout the year, each with varying aesthetic themes. The films will be shown as a cohesive unit at the May presentation. Before the presentation, audience members will have the opportunity to browse a gallery of Synaesthetic’s photographic work and speak with members of the company.
